Dance like no one is watching, sing like no one is listening…

31 Oct

My friends and I love a good quote. My friend Sarah is the one who told me my all-time favourite quote by writer William W. Purkey. He writes…

Dance like no one is watching;

Love like you’ll never be hurt;

Sing like no one is listening;

Live like it’s heaven on earth.

Since first hearing this quote I have made the line “Dance like no one is watching” my mantra. When I go to a party or dinner dance whether it be a friend’s party or a school social I pledge to dance to every song. This proves particularly challenging when the DJ decides to play Bon Jovi’s Living on a Prayer or The Beastie Boys Fight for Your Right (to Party).

Another saying I repeat often is, “Bite off more than you can chew and then chew like crazy” which the late Australian race car driver Peter Brock used to say often. This is pretty much how I’ve gotten most of my jobs, by assuring the boss that I’m more than capable of the task at hand and he/she not realising I am actually a duck and I am frantically paddling under water to stay afloat. I usually come good but not without a bit of pain, but “No pain no gain”, right?

How many times have you heard, “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”? Thanks Kate Moss. My response would be, “Depends what you’re eating”.

Oprah’s, “Being a parent is the hardest job on earth, if done properly” always stayed with me. I’ve always loved Margaret Thatcher’s “In politics if you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.” Probably reverse-sexism but amusing none the less.

Quotes, mantras, intonations, chants, whatever you like to call them, can be most powerful when it comes to getting through daily life. Recently I’ve been telling myself to “Feel the pain” because I have a habit of trying to avoid anything uncomfortable. “Feel the pain, feel the pain, feel the pain,” I repeat to myself, the words seeing me through until I am out the other end.

Dr Phil once said, “Hindsight is always twenty-twenty” and this is what I usually say to myself or others when we wish we could have a do-over.

What are your favourite quotes that motivate you? If you don’t have your own mantra, feel free to adopt mine. Shout it out with me….

Dance like no one is watching;

Love like you’ll never be hurt;

Sing like no one is listening;

Live like it’s heaven on earth!

I’m hiring a cleaner. DO NOT TRY AND STOP ME!

26 Oct

I am sick of living in squalor.

I am hiring a cleaner. DO NOT try and stop me.

I just need someone to give everything a good scrub at least one a month. Don’t worry. This lady-of-leisure will manage to keep herself busy on the day there aren’t here – cooking, tidying, vacuuming, sweeping, buying groceries, wiping snotty noses, doing laundry, ironing, banging the crap out of my rug, changing the bed sheets…I’m tired just writing this).

Ten years ago I hired a cleaner. I’d do a pre-clean before they arrived because I was so embarrassed by my neglected home and the amount of crap and dog hair that was on every surface. I’d also pitch in while they were cleaning, despite their protests. I felt guilty. I felt like a slob.

The reality is that I live in a very old home that always looks dirty no matter how much I clean. I’ve given up trying to make surfaces glisten. I’m going to settle for sanitary.

I will not pre-clean. I will give them plenty to do so their minimum two hours flies by and I won’t feel guilty. They want the work! They are happy to have a new regular client who no longer has indoor dogs. Yes, they may have to peel a forgotten fruit roll up from the bottom of the lounge but so what? They are professionals. I’m sure they’ve seen more disgusting houses than mine.

I work most days, I’m doing my Masters in Creative Writing, I have three children and they have a million activities and I can afford it. It’s only $80! I blow that much at the shops on lunch and a couple of puzzles from the toy store.

I plan to embrace and enjoy what I see as a new phase in my life. My name is Jo and I need help cleaning my home. I’m going to hire help. AND YOU CAN’T STOP ME (yes, I’m talking to myself).
